Look! Offensive language!

MiniToryAtlasOn a map, too! But wait, isn’t that map more than a little strange?

It is another gem from Strange Maps, the Tory Atlas of the World, and according to the blogger, the map that sparked his (or her) own passion for maps.
To fully appreciate the glory of this satirical atlas, you need to understand a few things about the British Tories (a dying race, perhaps?): nominally, they are the voters of the Conservative Party, but as a caricature, the British Tory is commonly held to be a rather chauvinistic creature who thinks British is always best, the Empire was really a blessing and everyone else does everything wrong anyway. It is in this spirit that the map has been drawn.

The world is divided into some of the following areas:

  • British Territory
  • Used to be British Territory
  • Ought to be British Territory
  • Ought to be below sea level
  • French Territory, and they’re welcome to it

You get the idea. For the complete map and a very thorough discussion of all the extremely (and very enjoyably) offensive details, see Strange Maps. (There’s also a more high-resolution version on Flickr.)

Oh, and let me borrow that blogger’s sentiment: Please be assured that none of the prejudices expressed in this map reflect my own convictions.

P.S.: Please note the position of the island of Pitcairn, which seems to have drifted from its usual remote home in the Pacific Ocean and magically swollen in size. Maybe it swallowed Sri Lanka, er, Ceylon…
