Story challenge No. 2 – Green Monster Seats!

Filed under: challenge, fun, spelling — mrs. h. @ 2:13 pm

I went to a very exciting football match yesterday, and in the spirit of both that and Halloween, here’s a new challenge:

Write a story of about 250 words about this picture:

Green Monster Seats

You can find the original picture on Flickr.

I’m sorry, only members of my class can enter.

The deadline is Friday, November 9th, 8 pm.

LanguageLog never fails to entertain me. In their current article on hyphenation, they provide a link to this excellent Editor’s Waltz, first written by a man who calls himself Dr. Whom. Here’s an example:

The signs in the market are rather a mess,
Selling APPLE’S and PEAR’S with apostrophe-S.
And saying their flounder is quote, “FRESH”, unquote
Suggests it’s just two or three weeks off the boat.

You will soon find out that many English-speaking people feel very strongly indeed about punctuation and other issues of language correctness, and always have. Toy with apostrophes and commas at your own risk…
